It’s been two years since French-Cuban twin-sisters, Naomi and Lisa-Kaindé Díaz, better known as Ibeyi, released their debut album. Since then, we’ve not seen or heard much from the pair, aside from a single released earlier this year and an appearance in Beyonce’s visual spectacular Lemonade back in 2016.
That all changed this week though. Yesterday, the Diaz sisters premiered their new single Away Away on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio show and then promptly shared the accompanying visuals today. The lead single from their forthcoming new album, the track is a rhythmic blend of contemporary R&B and West African influences, punctuated by wailing police sirens.
According to Ibeyi, Away Away is about “looking out onto the world’s craziness, which is symbolised by the sirens heard in the track, and wondering if the promises of a better world will be made true. The chorus of Away Away represents a burst of positive energy, us taking a conscious step towards movement and action because only the people can make good on that promise.”
The video finds the sisters in high spirits: singing into pink toy microphones, dancing and generally clowning around in the studio and having an all round great time embracing a burst of positive energy.
