Welcome back to The Monday Digest, your weekly roundup of all things musical, lovingly curated by your good friends here at Mahogany HQ.
We started the week with some exciting news from one of the UK’s biggest modern musical exports, Dev Hynes. At a talk at The New Yorker Festival, the London born artist shared that work on the follow up to last year’s Freetown Sound LP was well underway, announcing the project was “78% done” and would focus on Dev’s experiences growing up in England.
We kicked off Tuesday with the unveiling of Sean Christopher’s beautifully poignant animated video for his brand new single, Paper Plane Pilot. Set in a fictional refugee camp, the moving clip explores how children are able to overcome even the most bleak of scenarios through the power of their imagination. Tuesday also saw the return of Nick Murphy (fka Chet Faker), whose single, Medication, is the follow-up to this year’s Missing Link EP. The most exciting event on Tuesday, however, was the announcement by Mike Skinner that he would be reforming his legendary The Streets project for a UK tour next year. Tickets went on sale on Friday morning and promptly sold out in less than 5 minutes.
We welcomed American dance music titans, Odesza, to Mahogany HQ on Wednesday. The pair sat down to tackle the Mahogany Minute, giving us an insight into their routines, hopes and goals. We followed that up with the unveiling of the new video from American indie-pop band, Strawberry Runners, who shared a charming, lo-fi clip to accompany their charming latest single, Dog Days. Wednesday also treated us to new music from Sufjan Stevens, who shared Dungeons and Dragons, the lead single from his forthcoming project, The Greatest Gift Mixtape.
Thursday was a busy day here at Mahogany. We began with the exclusive unveiling of the politically charged new video from Irish trio, Wyvern Lingo. A stinging take on political apathy, the video for Out Of My Hands is powerful and extremely relevant message right now. We followed that up with the premiere of hotly-tipped newcomer, George Glew’s video for his rousing single, Home Love. Finally, we closed the day out over on Mahogany Sessions with the unveiling of the latest Session filmed during our recent trip to the States. This time, the wonderful Ethan Gruska performed a stripped-back version of his single, Teenage Drug, on a floodlit, deserted gas station forecourt. Watch the stunning Session in full below
Friday was, as ever, a feast of great new music. We started the day with an exclusive premiere of Like That, the new single from one of the brightest female talents in the UK, Carmody. We were treated to new albums from King Krule, St Vincent, Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile and Louis Mattrs, to name just a few. There were also new singles from the likes of Naaz, Mahalia, Rex Orange County and Kodaline. Our final Friday treat came courtesy of Rationale, who took over our Spotify playlist to share his favourite tracks of the moment with us. Listen to his picks and loads more below
