There is something fascinating about hearing artists that you love and listen to talking about their sources of inspiration. Which is why this Sampha remix of Minata Wiraba by Malian superstar Oumou Sangare stood out. Sampha is currently riding the wave of his 2017 Mercury music prize win for his debut album Process, having been an underground darling of the electronic / soul nu wave in the UK for some time. Oumou Sangare is a worldwide pioneer of Malian music and has been a huge inspiration for artists like Saint Germain, and we can add Sampha to her list of high profile fans.
Sampha has often expressed his admiration for Oumou; “My dad had a copy of Oumou’s album Worotan and no other album has spoken to me quite like that. Her music has been a huge inspiration ever since and it’s a real honour to have remixed some of her music.” Sampha takes the traditional Malian sound of Sangare’s Minata Wiraba and brings in abstract electronic and percussion flourishes, a staccato off beat bass line and muting effects on her all powerful voice – making the track feel like a recording from a far flung galaxy. The remix is part of a full remix album of Sangare’s 2017 album Mogoya.
Mogoya Remixed is on general release from 2nd March 2018
